Meet Penny

Penny, registered as Out of Ideas, is a New York–bred Thoroughbred whose story is one of strength, adaptation, and heart. This special copper penny is a relative of the 2022 Kentucky Derby winner! They both share a grandsire of Smart Strike.

She came to Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue when she was just three years old after sustaining a broken pelvis—an injury that ended any possibility of a riding or racing career. Still young and facing an uncertain future, Penny required time, careful management, and a safe place to recover, adjust, and settle into a new life..

At LOHR, Penny received consistent nutrition, veterinary oversight, farrier care, and the stability of a quiet, predictable environment. While her injury meant she would never be ridden, it did not diminish her curiosity, intelligence, or desire for connection. Instead, Penny found a new role—one rooted in presence rather than performance.

Today, Penny is a beloved sanctuary resident known for her large, solid frame, long legs, and gentle nature. She has become especially meaningful in ground-based interactions, where her size, gentle nature, and steady presence create opportunities for observation, connection, and self-awareness.

Penny’s journey reminds us that value is not measured by use, but by being. Her life at LOHR reflects our commitment to responsible aftercare and lifelong sanctuary—ensuring that horses like Penny are protected, cherished, and given purpose beyond traditional expectations.

From injury to independence, Penny embodies resilience and the quiet power of connection.
